MACLEOD PAPPIDAS | THE DAILY WORLD Elma’s Brandi Thomas is airborne in the triple jump competition at the State Track and Field championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma on Friday. Thomas won the event with a leap of 37 feet, 2 inches.

A former Hoquiam resident has received an Emmy nomination for taking audiences behind the scenes with K-9 security dogs and letting one attack her in training.

Barb Smith, Grays Harbor’s primary tourism booster, is resigning from her county post to take a job in Kent. Smith, who has been the prime mover for the county’s tourism department since it was created more than seven years ago, said she’s taking a job as the Kent Downtown Partnership Association.
